Enter your correct and wrong answers: net score calculated exactly, score as an estimated range
Method from ÖSYM's 2026-ALES guide and evaluation report
For each test, net score = correct − wrong ÷ 4. Blank questions do not affect the net score.
Your net score is converted, using the mean net and standard deviation of that session's candidates, into a score with a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10.
Quantitative: 75% Quantitative + 25% Verbal · Verbal: 25% Quantitative + 75% Verbal · Equal Weight: 50% + 50%.
ALES = 70 + 30 × [2(AP − X) − S] ÷ [2(B − X) − S]. A candidate whose weighted score is half a standard deviation above the session mean gets 70.
Reference statistics: ÖSYM, 2018-ALES/2 Evaluation Report, Table 2. In this session, 36,109 (32%) of the 112,029 candidates with known education data scored 70 or above in the Quantitative score type; this is consistent with the rate predicted by the formula above (about 31%). Report (PDF)
ALES has a 50-question Quantitative Test and a 50-question Verbal Test; 100 questions in total are answered in 150 minutes. Results are given out of 100 in three score types: ALES Quantitative, ALES Verbal and ALES Equal Weight.
Yes. For each test, net score = correct − wrong ÷ 4. For example, 36 correct and 12 wrong gives a net score of 33. Blank questions do not affect the net score.
There is no fixed equivalent. ÖSYM converts your net score into a standard score using the mean and standard deviation of that session's candidates, weights the two tests by score type and scales the result to 100. The same net score can yield different scores in different sessions depending on overall candidate performance. That is why this tool shows the score as an approximate range rather than a single number.
Weights: in the Quantitative score type, Quantitative Test 75% and Verbal Test 25%; the reverse for the Verbal score type; 50%–50% for Equal Weight. The weighted score is converted to a 100-point scale with the formula ALES = 70 + 30 × [2(AP − X) − S] ÷ [2(B − X) − S] (X mean, S standard deviation, B highest weighted score). In this formula, 70 points corresponds to a candidate whose weighted score is half a standard deviation above the session mean.
According to the ÖSYM guide, ALES results are valid for 5 years from the announcement date. At least 55 points are required for thesis-based master's and doctoral programs, and at least 70 for research assistant and lecturer positions; programs may require higher scores.
